BODEX Update: No action on charitable donations; the path forward; lower fees for 2017!

At its December 2 meeting, the Board of Dental Examiners had the issue of using the Dental Board Fund to make contributions to dental charitable activities on its Agenda, but took no action after consulting with legal counsel in executive session. After returning to open session, the Board blew right past the charitable giving idea, and then moved to consider the letter and proposal submitted by AzDA and the Arizona Dental Hygienists' Association that suggested a three year "fee holiday." Several considerations came to light, including the logistics of such a move.

Following comments and questions directed to Executive Director Earle, the Board then directed staff to conduct a more informal working session with stakeholders to explore various alternatives. That meeting is scheduled for early January. Hopefully, a substantive recommendation to whittle down the $5 million balance in the Dental Board Fund will result.

During the session, BODEX Executive Director Elaine Hugunin reported that the Governor's Regulatory Review Commission (aka "GRRC") had scheduled a final hearing on the Board's proposed rules that would lower fees for the 2017 renewal period. At its December 8 meeting, GRRC approved the final rules. For those dentist members who are renewing in 2017, triennial fees will drop to $510, a $90 decrease. Other fee reductions were included in the rules package (see related story).
